Boston Symphony Orchestra: How #DIESE Supports Daily Operations

Boston Symphony Orchestra Symphony Hall

Managing a Historic Institution

Founded in 1881, the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is a world-class symphony with a rich legacy. It performs at Symphony Hall, tours internationally, and holds a summer residency at the Tanglewood Music Center.

The BSO archives performances going back to 1883. This history shapes the orchestra’s identity and requires careful management of works, versions, and performers. Artistic data is a living resource that needs to be accurate and accessible.

Finding the Right Tool

Before #DIESE, the BSO used OPAS to manage musicians. While useful for orchestral tasks, it did not support the full scope of the institution. The BSO needed a system that could handle:

  • Scheduling all performances and tours
  • Managing productions and rehearsal planning
  • Tracking the repertoire in detail
  • Supporting both seasonal planning and day-to-day operations

Bringing History into the System

The first step was migrating historical data from OPAS. This included over 12,000 performances with detailed information on works and artists.

Importing this archive preserved continuity and gave the BSO a foundation for ongoing operations.

Covering Every Area of Activity

#DIESE now supports the BSO across multiple areas:

  • Planning: schedules for performances, tours, and Tanglewood residencies
  • Productions: all projects tracked in one system
  • Repertoire Library: managing all versions of works
  • COB Module: planning and monitoring artist engagements

It also connects to the BSO public archive and integrates with Tessitura, Workday, and Microsoft SSO, allowing data to flow smoothly across teams.

Benefits for Teams

Teams across the orchestra now work from the same data. Production staff, artistic directors, library teams, and management all have access to the information they need.

This shared approach reduces errors, improves scheduling accuracy, and makes it easier to analyze the repertoire. Integration with other systems ensures all data moves securely between platforms.

Supporting Growth and Complexity

This project is more than software implementation. It reflects an organizational shift. The BSO can now manage planning, productions, and artist engagements in a single, reliable environment.
